The hotel's design is unique in its adventurous and edgy celebration of theatrical arts in daily life settings in Chengdu. The design team drew inspiration from the city's Bian Lian performances at local theatres, magnifying the mysterious and transformation aspects. The super graphic at the headboard is animated by textured acrylic panels at the front, creating an effect similar to lenticular printing. The forms and shapes widely used for the Bian Lian masks are translated to organic shapes throughout the rooms.
W Chengdu is a visual and tactile journey among neutral tones in stones and wood, celebrating Chengdu's energy in bursts of vivid hues with materials such as dichroic glass. Its color-shifting properties reflect light changes, mesmerizing guests with the iridescent color effects. The room combines a soft palette of soft tones accented with bright yellow, signifying fierceness, ambition, and cool-headedness – perfectly suited for the W disruptors with their lust for life mindset.
The hotel covers a total of 26800 sq. meters, including public areas spanning over 5 levels, and approximately 297 guest rooms and suites. The design is an equilibrium between brand identity on bold and witty VS. Client’s desire for an enduring scheme. The design must capture cultural imagination but with its own distinct identity.
The design process involved extensive research based on previous travel experiences to Chengdu, interviews with locals, and web and social media references. The design team faced the challenge of creating a design that captures the cultural imagination while maintaining its own distinct identity. However, they successfully overcame this challenge, creating a design that is both bold and enduring.
The project was completed in October 2020 in Chengdu, Sichuan China. It has been awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to the design's outstanding and trendsetting creation that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
